Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (P.L.99-506) |
In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Federal agencies must ensure that this technology is accessible to employees and members of the public with disabilities to the extent it does not pose an “undue burden”. To see the standards in full visit www.access-board.gov or www.section508.gov
The Accessible Technology Center (ATC) has been working to support Section 508 by teaching Section 508 Web Page Design for People with Disabilities classes. These classes have been taught since February, 2001. The class is a 3 hour overview of the Section 508 Web Standards and how to make your web page comply with them.
The ATC has a Section 508 web testing station that includes software for web designers to be able to test out their web page with different screen readers and validation tools.
