State and Tribal Assistance Grant Programs

Forging strong partnerships is an important aspect of EPA's enforcement and compliance assurance program. States and tribes play a crucial role in the implementation of our nation's environmental laws and regulations. Strengthening these relationships through improved coordination, joint work planning and specialized assistance will promote greater compliance. One key partnership with states involves work planning and support through cooperative agreements, referred to as State and Tribal Assistance Grants (STAG).

The enforcement and compliance assurance program manages several grant programs that directly aid and assist states and tribes in implementing their compliance and enforcement programs.

Other State Grant Programs

The State Environmental Enforcement Training Program grants are managed by the National Enforcement Training Institute (NETI) and are intended to build state capacity for monitoring compliance with and enforcing violations of environmental laws and regulations.  The program provides training opportunities throughout the 50 United States and reaches a variety of professional disciplines, covering multiple statutes/media/programs.  This grant program is being competed for the first time in FY2009.

EPA compliance and enforcement program also provides financial assistance to eligible affected local community-based organizations working on or planning to work on projects to address local environmental and/or public health concerns through Environmental Justice Grant program.
