The OSHA and ASSE Alliance will focus on providing ASSE's members and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, including non-English or limited English speaking and youth workers. In particular, the Alliance will address ergonomic and motor vehicle safety issues and promoting the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The goals of the Alliance include:

Outreach and communication:
  • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the ASSE's Web sites) to employers and employees.
  • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or ASSE's conferences, local meetings, or other events such as ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference.
  • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding ASSE's best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by ASSE and through OSHA- or ASSE-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
  • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
  • Encourage ASSE's chapters to build relationships with OSHA's Regional and Area Offices to address health and safety issues.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on safety and health issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

Sponsored annually by ASSE and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
  • March 12, 2009: The National Capital Chapter of ASSE and Potomac Section of AIHA Joint Chapter Meeting, DOL Auditorium, Washington, DC.
  • Dave Heidorn, Manager, Government Affairs, ASSE, delivered an update on the activities of the OSHA and ASSE Alliance. OSHA senior staff also delivered an overview of the Agency's compliance assistance and cooperative program activities to more than 100 safety and health professionals from the Washington, DC area.
  • October 20-26, 2008: 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. The American Society of Safety Engineers and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the Week focused on educating employers, employees and the public about the importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
  • June 9-12, 2008: ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2008, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.
    • June 9-12, 2008: OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
    • June 10, 2008: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., former-Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, participated in the Plenary Session and addressed the key issues and concerns of safety, health and environment professionals regarding the impact of the federal government on standards development and compliance assistance efforts.

Mr. Shalhoub presented  "Safety is Good Business" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health representatives.

  • Alliance Program Construction Roundtable. Through the Alliance Program's Construction Roundtable and its Design for Safety and Fall Protection Workgroups, a number of outreach products and training resources have been developed for the construction industry, including Toolbox Talks on Ladder Safety and the Design for Safety and Fall Protection slide presentations.
  • ASSE's Safety Professionals and the Latino Workforce (SPALW) Workgroup. SPALW provides an arena for safety directors, managers, supervisors, consultants and others who have a common interest in this subject to discuss, research, develop and implement new suggestions, ideas and recommendations for issues related to the Latino workforce.
  • Hazardous Materials Safety Information Guide [PDF - 86 KB]. An ASSE free brochure that was developed for the 2002 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week to arm people with key safety information on hazmats. The brochure includes information on what hazmats are, what happens when an accident occurs, the role of the Local Emergency Planning Committees and other agencies and provides key contacts.
  • Important Workplace Safety Guide for Young Workers [PDF - 434 KB]. An ASSE-developed free brochure that contains key state and federal contact information, important facts to know and workplace safety questions workers and parents should ask.
