National Parks Along the River Unite!
America’s most famous river has inspired almost a dozen parks and partners to gather and discuss the possibilities to collaborate. On October 14-16, park superintendents in the Midwest and Southeast regions gathered in the shadow of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial to explore how the Mississippi River connects their places and stories.

Tour to be held at Rock Island Bridge
Built in 1894, the Rock Island Swing Bridge was the longest swing span bridge in the world at the time it was constructed and is possibly the only remaining swing bridge in the US that was uniquely constructed to carry trains on an upper level deck and passenger traffic on the lower level deck.

Hennepin County will close the Lowry Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis today at 10 a.m. The bridge, which was built in 1905 and rebuilt from its original structure in 1958, spans the Mississippi River, connecting Northeast and North Minneapolis.

The commercial navigation season got its latest start ever in this area with the arrival this morning (April 11) of the first tow and barges to reach St. Paul. The MV David L. Griggs made it through Lake Pepin ice on Thursday.

Commercial navigation on the Mississippi River here in the metropolitan area is likely to get a pretty late start in 2008. As the weather warms and river ice begins to break up, Lake Pepin is usually the last barrier to northbound towboat traffic.

St. Anthony Falls Drawdown
On February 20, 2008, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowered the quarter-mile long reservoir between the Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls Locks and Dams. They did so to inspect one of the two flood control tunnels for the Bassett Creek watershed. One of the outlets flows into the reservoir between the locks and dams.
