Trade Opportunities

Government policy changes have signaled to foreign investors that Nepal is open for business. Recent amendments in the Foreign Investment and Technology Transfer Act has opened almost all sectors for foreign investment and operations in some sectors that were previously government monopolies, such as telecommunications and civil aviation. Licensing and regulations have been simplified, and 100 percent foreign ownership is allowed.

Nepal became a member of WTO in April 2004. Under its WTO commitments, Nepal is gearing up to remove many tariff and non-tariff bariers in trade to make its WTO membership fully effective from Janaury 1, 2007. New banking institutions and a nascent stock exchange provide alternative sources of investment capital.
