Projects
EPA developed the shared responsibility pilots to help demonstrate the kinds of voluntary partnerships that could significantly increase recycling of used electronics in the United States. At the time the pilots were implemented very little national infrastructure existed for collecting, reusing, and recycling electronics. Those participating in the pilots did so to help identify the most efficient and practical electronics collection methods and to obtain more information about what kind of end-of-life electronics were coming back and how citizens responded to various collection opportunities.

- In 2006, Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality
(DEQ) piloted its Rural
Electronic Waste Recycling Program
to provide the first series of electronics recycling opportunities
to residents in communities throughout the state. Plug-In
partners Staples, JVC, Lexmark, Panasonic, Phillips, Sharp,
Sony, Toshiba, and Best Buy co-sponsored events in Helena,
Missoula and Butte and paid for the cost of recycling their
brands.
