EPA created the Land Revitalization Initiative to promote cross-program coordination on land reuse and revitalization projects to ensure that contaminated property is appropriately put back into productive use. The initiative incorporates efforts from the Superfund, Brownfields, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Brownfields, Office of Underground Storage Tanks, Federal Facilities Restoration and Reuse, and the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance programs and offices. Regardless of whether a property is an abandoned industrial facility, a waste disposal area, a former gas station, or a Superfund site, the Land Revitalization Initiative helps to ensure that reuse considerations are integrated into all cleanup decisions.

The Land Revitalization Initiative assists EPA managers and staff as they work closely with federal, state, tribal, public, and private stakeholders in facilitating contaminated property cleanup and reuse. Cleaning up previously contaminated properties for reuse can help reinvigorate communities, preserve greenspace, and prevent sprawl. Revitalized land can be used in many ways, including: the creation of public parks; the restoration of wetlands; and the establishment of new businesses. To support the Land Revitalization Initiative, EPA created the Land Revitalization Agenda to integrate reuse into EPA's cleanup programs, establish partnerships, and help make land revitalization part of EPA's organizational culture.
