Using Design for the Environment Concepts in Your EMS
This document illustrates the benefits of implementing an EMS based on DfE concepts. It uses real-world examples from the Acushnet Rubber Company in Massachusetts.

This publication is designed to help federal managers understand EMSs and how one can help them improve environmental management at their facilities. It also outlines the elements of an EMS, offers tips on how to make the case for an EMS to upper management, explains how an EMS will benefit an organization, and places EMSs in the context of regulations, compliance government programs.

Reports

Financial Market Incentives for Environmental Management Systems (PDF) (39 pp, 706K)
This report was developed by an EPA cross-agency steering group that examined whether EMSs and other environmental improvements are valued within U.S. capital markets. In general, the steering group found that, although there is strong interest in EMS within the financial sector (e.g., insurance, bond and equity markets), little weight is placed on EMS as a factor in evaluating a company's financial performance. The steering group also found that mainstream capital markets had a limited, but growing, awareness of environmental issues.

Environmental Management Review (EMR) National Report: Lessons Learned in Conducting EMRs at Federal Facilities (PDF) (72 pp, 428K)
This publication was developed by EPA’s Federal Facilities Enforcement Office (FFEO) in the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. It details the many lessons that EPA and others have learned in conducting EMRs at federal facilities.

This publication provides an exciting account of an environmental management review that was conducted at the National Park Service. The review was based on the (CEMP) Code of Environmental Management Principles.

Identifying Objectives for Your Environmental Management System (EPA/744-F-97-009)
Describes the initial steps taken by a PWB manufacturer (HR Industries, Inc.) to develop an environmental management system (EMS), shows the similarity between the requirements for ISO 14001 and ISO 9000, and demonstrates how the ISO 9000 quality system may be used to begin building an ISO 14001 EMS.

This publication describes the benefits of initiating an environmental management system (EMS), and describes the process by which a company can identify the environmental aspects of its operations and determine their significance, based on the experiences of HR Industries, Inc. (now McDonald Technologies), a PWB manufacturer.
