The first order of business in selling internationally is:

Getting Paid

A Letter of Credit (L/C) is the most common form of payment of seafood shipments.
It protects the interests of you, the seller and of your customer, but fees associated with L/Cs are not inconsequential.

There are risk mitigation programs of the federal government that might allow you to consider selling on an open account basis. They are:

USDA's Supplier’s Credit Guarantee Program reduces the financial risk to exporters by guaranteeing 65% of the payments due from importers under financing arrangements of up to 180 days. The direct credit extended by the exporter to the importer for the purchase of U.S. agricultural products must be secured by a promissory note signed by the importer.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Export Credit Guarantee Program (GSM-102) helps ensure that credit is available to finance commercial exports of U.S. agricultural products, while providing competitive credit terms to buyers. By reducing financial risk to lenders, credit guarantees encourage exports to buyers in countries—mainly developing countries—where credit is necessary to maintain or increase U.S. sales, but where financing may not be available without such guarantees. The GSM-102 program underwrites credit extended by the private banking sector in the United States to approved foreign banks using dollar-denominated, irrevocable letters of credit for purchases of U.S. food and agricultural products by foreign buyers. Typically, 98 percent of principal and a portion of interest are covered by a guarantee.

ExIm Bank’s Short-Term Export Credit Insurance covers short-term sales made by an exporter during a 12-month period; policy requires all or a reasonable spread of export credit sales to be insured; supports repayment terms up to 180 days; risk coverage provides 95% commercial and political risk coverage against buyer payment defaults.
