10. I am new to exporting and am uncertain as to which documents I need. Which documents are commonly used in exporting?

Export document requirements usually vary by country destination and product. More detailed information on Shipper’s Export Declarations, Dual Use and Defense Trade Export Licenses, Commercial or Consular Invoices, Certificate of Origin, Bills of Lading, Insurance Certificates, Import Licenses, Air Way Bills, Inspection Certification, Dock and Warehouse Receipts and Destination Control Statements can be found at http://www.export.gov/logistics/exp_docs_forms.asp.

11. What products require an export license?

Certain products, because of their dual-use in nature, may require an export license. Dual-use refers to a product’s applicability to both civilian and military purposes. These include super computers and high tech devices. While such products can be used for civilian purposes, they can readily be applied to a foreign country’s military program, which can ultimately threaten US national security.

12. How do I find an HS Code/Schedule B number for my product?

Information about Schedule B codes can be found at the U.S. Census website, at http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/schedules/b/. Scroll down to the “Search” section of the page to find a Schedule B number for your particular product.

13. How do I file the Shipper’s Export Declaration electronically?

Visit http://www.aesdirect.gov/ to file your Shipper’s Export Declaration (SED) to the Automated Export System (AES). You can file your SEDs one at a time, at no cost.

14. How do I simplify customs procedures for the temporary importation of commercial samples, professional equipment, and goods for exhibitions and fairs?

To ease the importation of your product to foreign buyers, you can obtain an ATA Carnet. Carnets are international customs documents that simplify customs procedures for the temporary importation of various types of goods. They facilitate international business by avoiding extensive customs procedures, eliminating payment of duties and value-added taxes (minimum 20% in Europe, 27% in China), and replacing the purchase of temporary import bonds.
