The Inland Empire U.S. Export Assistance Center, located in Ontario, California, is an office of the United States Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. Our organization is a U.S. Government agency committed to providing up-to-date information concerning trade opportunities in the global market to help U.S. companies achieve full potential by expanding their market internationally. We assist export-ready firm in finding and assessing markets, making contacts, and obtaining trade finance. Our network includes 160+ offices in 82 countries and 100+ offices in the Unites States.

The internship program in the Inland Empire district is designed to provide students with a thorough orientation to international trade. This includes export marketing research, documentation, regulations, shipping, trade show recruitment, export financing and other export related activities. Interns will have the opportunity to interact with international trade professionals, learn how to research marketing information, access government databases and participate in telemarketing campaigns. The intern program also requires answering telephone calls concerning export-related questions, helping walk-in visitors, providing support during client visits, and assisting our office in other administrative and clerical duties.

Students interested in applying for an internship position with the U.S. Commercial Service in the Inland Empire should be studying International Business, International Relations, Economics, Business Administration, Marketing or other related business subjects. Internship requirements:

  • Candidates MUST be U.S. citizens.
  • The internship length is 6 months for a total of 384 hours at 2 days a week (8 hours per day)
  • This is a NON-PAID INTERNSHIP. Credit is sometimes worked out between the student and the relevant university.
  • Candidates must be enrolled at least part-time at a college or university.

Upon successful completion of the internship program, the student is awarded with the official Certificate of Training and a Letter of Recommendation .

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Computer knowledge in programs such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Publisher, Lotus applications as well as experience with Internet-based research is helpful. Student's overall and concentration Grade Point Average (GPA) will be considered in the selection process.
