Most of the energy supply in the United States is generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil. These forms of non-renewable energy produce greenhouse gases and other pollutants. However, clean energy options, called "green power," are becoming more readily available. Best of all, some of these new energy options are infinitely renewable. Sources of green power include wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, landfill gas and hydro power. In addition to promoting these clean energy alternatives, EPA has encouraged the development of new gasoline formulations that are expected to reduce greenhouse emissions up to 25 percent. For the last ten years, EPA also has partnered with the Department of Energy to identify and promote energy efficient products under the Energy Star program.
