These public lands play a vital role in providing open space and contribute to Colorado's quality of life. But managing these lands is a challenging task for the BLM, particularly at a time when the State's population has increased from 3.3 million in 1990 to about 4 million in 2000, a 23 percent increase. With more people using the public lands for recreation, as well as for more traditional purposes, such as grazing and mining, open space is fast becoming the land management issue of the 21st century. The fact is, open space - the West's distinctive quality - is shrinking, and this makes the BLM's management of the public lands more important than ever. BLM and the US Forest Service have adjacent lands and common customers throughout Colorado. Where possible, we have partnered through the Service First Initiative to provide better and more convenient service to our customers to share resources for more cost-effective delivery of services. We have also partnered with other Federal agencies, agencies of State and local governments, private employers, environmental groups, and individual citizens, to ensure that we are responsive to the needs of our citizens. The BLM, working with public and private partners, will fulfill its land management mission in Colorado. We have offices scattered across the state - see map for specific locations.
