Non-hazardous waste includes household waste, municipal waste, food waste and some industrial wastes. More than half of all non-hazardous waste ends up in landfills. In order to reduce the amount of non-hazardous waste generated in the United States, the EPA encourages conservation, composting and recycling. In addition, the Agency fosters voluntary programs such as WasteWise, which rewards participating for adopting customized reduction practices.
