Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP)

New Update!

New Resource to Help Businesses and their Supply Chains from Counterfeiters and Pirates!

On Wednesday, January 24, 2007, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy (CACP) released the No Trade in Fakes Supply Chain Tool Kit.  This important document showcases many proven strategies that companies both small and large use to protect their supply chains from counterfeiters and modern-day pirates.

The only document of its kind, the tool kit highlights successful strategies that companies employ--from sourcing to distribution to eliminating illegitimate products from supply chains.  It also includes seven case studies of companies, including Ford, New Balance, and Purdue Pharma, that discuss the problems they each face in brand protection and aggressive techniques they employ to fight counterfeiting and piracy and protect consumers.

In addition to the tool kit, on Wednesday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m. EST, the Chamber and the CACP will host the first in a series of FREE WEBINARS to further educate businesses about the supply chain security and anti-counterfeiting strategies.  This online event will include representatives from companies featured in the tool kit as well as experts on supply chain protection.

On October 4, 2006 Commerce Secretary Evans, joined by Ambassador Robert Zoellick, Attorney General John Ashcroft, and Homeland Security Under Secretary Asa Hutchinson, announced a comprehensive Administration initiative to protect American innovation by halting trade in counterfeit and pirated goods.

A key component of the Administration’s “Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP!)” initiative is empowering small businesses to protect your intellectual property rights abroad. As companies export their goods and services, it is important that you consider taking the necessary steps to protect your valuable intellectual property to prevent it from being stolen. The Commerce Department will take the lead role in this effort and the Commercial Service will be on the front lines counseling U.S. exporters in how to protect your intellectual property.

Under the STOP! initiative, Commerce established a hotline providing a one-stop-shop for businesses to protect their intellectual property at home and abroad. Companies with intellectual property questions or concerns can call 1-866-999-HALT (4258) and leverage the resources of the United States Government. Commerce is also creating a new website, http://www.stopfakes.gov, with information on how to protect intellectual property at home and abroad.
