Activity: Infant Immunization Week
Description: With all of the current media surrounding the safety of vaccines, we decided to focus on that issue for Infant Immunization Week. We had some tee shirts made of various sizes stating "Vaccines are Safe, Tell all Your Friends". We rounded up a group of children willing to take some pictures wearing the shirts. We are shooting the photo at a local park and featuring the kids in action shots, sending the message that "we are healthy and active because we were vaccinated". We plan on using the photo's to make posters, and will include testimonials from the kids such as "My name is Alex and I have never gotten sick with the flu because I get my flu shot every year since birth" and " I get my vaccinations so I can ride my bide every day without worrying about having to stay home sick". It will be fun to hear what the kids have to say. We are including several age groups including infants, toddlers and teenagers and have also included several different ethnicities including Asian, Black, Hispanic and Caucasian.

Date/Time: April 18, 2009 through May 2, 2009
Activity: Promotion of National Infant Immunization Week
Description: The Hawaii State Department of Health Immunization Branch partnered with the Hawaii Immunization Coalition to staff a booth at a YMCA Healthy Kids Day event on Saturday, April 18th, as a lead into NIIW. Approximately 3,000 people attended the event. For the children’s activity, a locally written and produced immunization coloring book, Amy Immunosaurus, was featured. Finger puppets were cut out from the coloring book for children to color and wear at the event. They each received a copy of the coloring book and crayons. Parents were asked to read the story of Amy Immunosaurus to the children when they got home. Two locally produced brochures, "What Every Family Should Know About Shots" and "Keep Your Preteen Up-to-Date, Vaccinate!," were available for parents along with the CDC handout, Recommended Immunizations for Babies. Magnets and buttons with the message, Immunize Every Keiki by Age 2, were also available. A laptop with VPD videos continually played throughout the day.

The NIIW button was placed on the Hawaii State Department of Health website which links to the CDC NIIW website. A large health insurance plan also added the NIIW information to its website.

A news release about NIIW is scheduled to be released on Friday, April 24, 2009. It focuses on the recent increase in pertussis cases throughout the nation and in Hawaii, and the importance of infant immunizations.

A short article was developed for several EPSDT newsletters distributed to members enrolled in Hawaii’s Medicaid waiver program, QUEST. Another article for staff of social service agencies was sent out through Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, and Good Beginnings Alliance.

The family services coordinator for Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Health Services facilitates a family strengthening program. She plans to read The Germ Patrol All About Shots for Tots…and Big Kids, Too! to the children in the program. She will also share Vaccine-Preventable Disease: The Forgotten Story with the parents.

Indiana

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Date/Time: April 20, 2009
Activity: Fort Wayne Super Shot Launches New Program
Description: Fort Wayne-based Super Shot has launched a new program to help parents stay current on their children’s vaccines. Super Shot is an independent, non-governmental organization that provides free vaccines to children.

Through Project Immunization, Super Shot distributes materials to hospitals that parents of newborns can use to track their child’s immunizations.

Super Shot staff uses a state program to identify children 2 and younger behind on immunizations who have been served by the organization.

They also visit preschools and child-care agencies to give information about immunizations to parents and staff.

Super Shot has monthly clinics at child-care centers to immunize children up to age 2. Since it was established in 1992, Super Shot has provided more than 125,000 Allen County children with more than 329,000 free immunizations. It’s financed by individual donors and community partners.

Contact: http://www.phpni.com/supershot.aspx or call 424-7468.

Date/Time: April 24, 2009 - May 1, 2009
Activity: Super Shot launches Project Immunize
Description: In recognition of National Infant Immunization Week, Super Shot Inc. is promoting its new "Project Immunize" program.

Super Shot’s Project Immunize aims to reach children two and younger in several ways: Super Shot has presented "immunization passports" to local hospitals for distribution to all newborns. The passport serves as a personal record for a child’s immunization history, and it provides the parent with information about immunizations, a Super Shot clinic calendar, Super Shot contact information and a schedule of recommended immunizations.

Super Shot staff are using the Children and Hoosiers Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP) to identify children age two or younger who are behind in their immunizations and who have been served by Super Shot in the past. Using that information, staff are personally contacting parents to ask if the records are correct and, if so, educate and encourage the parents to bring their children to Super Shot to complete the immunizations. For those children who have received immunizations elsewhere, Super Shot will update its records accordingly and mail "Certificates of Bravery" to those parents who send updated records to be recorded in CHIRP.

Super Shot staff will also visit preschools and child care agencies to provide information about immunization to parents and staff. Super Shot is also conducting monthly clinics at child care centers immunizing children 0-2 years of age.

Families visiting Super Shot during NIIW will receive immunization passports and a copy of "What to Expect Guide to Immunizations: What You Need to Know About Your Child’s Vaccinations," written by Heidi Murkoff, author of the "What to Expect…" series of books for parents, parents-to-be and preschoolers, and Sharon Mazel. In addition, family physicians and pediatricians will receive a special mailing explaining the details of Project Immunize.

Description: To highlight the importance of infant vaccinations, the City of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DHWP) will kick off Detroit's celebration of National Infant Immunization and Vaccine Week with free walk-in immunizations, giveaways, a contest, and educational display and outreach. DHWP will offer free walk-in immunization clinics, an interactive educational display with various giveaways, a disease information door-decorating contest, and will partner with local McDonald's restaurants to provide community-wide education and awareness. In addition, DHWP will expand its walk-in hours on Tuesday, April 28 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. In the first 24 months of life, children need more than 80% of their vaccinations to protect them from diseases, disabilities and death. National Infant Immunization Week(NIIW) is a national effort to educate parents, caregivers, providers, and communities on the importance of timely infant immunizations. The City of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, the Michigan Department of Community Health, local McDonald's, and local health care organizations and providers are joining together to highlight the need for routine vaccinations and to promote access to health care services for Detroit's infants and children during this week.

Nearly one million children in the United States are not adequately immunized. Each day 11,000 children are born in the United States, and they are in need of protection from 14 vaccine-preventable diseases before the age of two. Immunizations are safe and protect our children, families and community, thereby making them one of the most cost-effective public health strategies.

DHWP is once again partnering with some local McDonald's restaurants to distribute immunization flyers. Children who present their flyer at one of the DHWP-sponsored clinics after getting their shots will receive a coupon for a free kiddie cone from McDonald's.

Activity: Be Wise and Immunize! Spreading the word!
Description: As part of the Community/Public Health Nursing course at Rhode Island College School of Nursing, students create Public Policy Presentations that are presented to nursing faculty, staff and peers. The Public Policy Presentations act as a tool to provide students with the experience of working in a group to formulate ideas and present them to the community, legislators and the college community. Mark Burke, RN, Leeann Schmitt, Kathryn Urban, Peter Giza, Melissa Sabella, Cheryl Larsson, Jenna Caparco and Stephanie Costa have decided to present a great public health concern: childhood immunizations and the importance of informing parents and the community about the need for immunizing children and the potential risks that could occur if immunization is avoided. To get the message out to the public, they have decided to become involved in National Infant Immunization Week with the RI Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The students have distributed 25 posters in stores, clinics, pharmacies and doctor’s offices in Providence and surrounding communities to spread the message "Immunize your child by age 2: Love them. Protect them. Immunize them." The posters were printed from the CDC website and contain contact information for families. In addition to this, the students will be working with the RI Department of Health, educating young children at Head Start Programs around Rhode Island about hygiene, germs and vaccinations as well as providing the children with information to take home to their parents. Lastly, the students will showcase some facts about childhood immunizations and National Infant Immunization Week in a display at the college and present their information to the college community through the Public Policy Presentations.
