UMLS® Release Notes and Problems (Bugs)

2009AA - Current UMLS Release

What's New

Metathesaurus®

Three new English sources were added:

  • ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS)
  • International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
  • International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health - Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY)

Two new translations were added:

  • Korean Standard Classification of Disease Version 5 (KCD-5)
  • Latvian translation of the Medical Subject Headings (MSHLAV)

31 English sources and 17 translation sources were updated. These include ICNP, MeSH, MedDRA, RxNorm, and SNOMED CT (English and Spanish). For a complete list of updated sources, see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/updated_sources.html. For more detailed information on changes in this version of the Metathesaurus, see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/updated_sources_expanded.html.

The Current Dental Terminology (CDT) has been removed from the Metathesaurus. CDT continues to be included in the HCPCS Version of Current Dental Terminology (HCDT).

ICD9CM_2007 to ICD10PCS_2008 mappings have been added. The mappings are bi-directional.

Data Changes

SNOMED CT
The Source Restriction Level (SRL) value in the 2009AA UMLS Metathesaurus has been changed from "4" to "9" for the following sources:

  • SNOMED CT (SNOMEDCT)
  • SNOMED CT Spanish (SCTSPA)
  • SNOMED-2 (SNM)
  • SNOMED International (SNMI)

There are no changes to the terms of the license, but only to the encoding of the SRL in the Metathesaurus. SRL data is encoded in Metathesaurus files: MRCONSO.RRF (MRSO in original release format) and MRSAB.

SAUI and SRUI
The values of SAUI and SRUI have been replaced with AUI and RUI. The values can be found in the STYPE column of Metathesaurus files: MRSAT.RRF and MRREL.RRF.

Medical Subject Headings, Swedish Edition
Definitions were dropped from this version.

MetamorphoSys

A full Metathesaurus subset now requires 17.7 GB of disk space.

Reported bugs may be viewed on the Release Notes Web page.
