Other studies being conducted in FFS study plots

A growing number of studies, funded separately from the main FFS study, are being conducted within the FFS plots at Sequoia National Park. By utilizing the existing replicated experimental design, considerable cost savings are achieved.

These studies include:

1. Incorporating spatial variability into fire restoration plans. Funding provided by the Joint Fire Science Program: $155,518 for 2002-2004

Dean Urban (Duke University)
deanu@pinus.env.duke.edu; (919) 613-8076
Jon Keeley (USGS)
jon_keeley@usgs.gov; (559) 565-3170
Monique Rocca (Duke University)
mer3@duke.edu; (919) 613-8124

2. Landscape implications of fire and fire-surrogate treatments on fisher habitat in the Sierra Nevada. Funding: $23,000 for 2003-2004

Richard Truex, USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station – Placerville
rtruex@fs.fed.us; (530) 409-1282
Bill Zielinski, USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station – Arcata
bzielinski@fs.fed.us; (707) 825-2943

3. Obtaining indirect measures of canopy fuels at the Fire and Fire Surrogate Study sites. Funding by the Joint Fire Sciences Program: $89,641 for 2003-2004
