Sequoia National Park prescribed fire program

Since the 1960’s, prescribed fire has been used to reduce fuels and restore ecosystem health within Sequoia National Park. Giant sequoias require bare mineral soil and canopy gaps for recruitment – conditions created by fire. While the prescribed fire program within the Parks initially focused on giant sequoia groves, prescribed fire is now being applied to different fire-dependent ecosystems within the park.
