The U.S. Commercial Service New Delhi in India, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), offers internship opportunities throughout the year. The program is designed for college or university undergraduates and graduate students of Economics, Business Administration and related fields. It provides "hands-on" experience by working in a Commercial Service Office at the U.S. Embassy on research, trade events, and business issues for U.S. firms interested in the Indian market.   Student Internship program also provides an opportunity to continue your education, to train with people who manage the day-to-day business of the Federal government, and to combine your academic study with on-the-job experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist Commercial Specialists in program activities, including trade show recruitment and participation, launching promotional campaigns for American firms, conducting market research, contacting the Indian business public to support product and event promotions, and identifying sources of supply in the United States for Indian buyers.

  • Work closely with Commercial Service American Officers and Indian Trade Commercial Specialists to help U.S. executives understand India and Indian commercial opportunities

  • Prepare industry specific market research

  • Counsel U.S. Companies

  • Edit Publications

  • Participate in the organization of trade events and exhibitions

  • Office management/administration projects on an as-need basis, including system administration IT management

  • Attend various functions as a representative of the Commercial Service

  • Work closely with other U.S. and Indian agencies on various projects

  • Clerical work  

Internship Eligibility:

Ø  United States or Indian citizenship (students in United States)

Ø   Majors in business or public administration, economics, international affairs, or related field.

Ø  A superior academic rating and a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for undergraduates and graduates at the time of application.

Ø  Fluency in English language

Ø  Availability for a minimum of 3 to 6 months and are required to be full-time while working in India and, thus, work the equivalent 32-40 hours each week.

Ø  Excellent business communication, computer skills, and interpersonal skills

Selection is made without regard to considerations of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, marital status or handicap. Every intern must receive a positive security check by the U.S. Government prior to the start of an internship.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Procedure for Application - Each applicant needs to provide the following information regardless of whether he or she is currently residing overseas or domestically:
1.  Cover Letter: Why you want to be an intern, what you have to offer and how you hope to benefit from the internship.
2. Resume: Future goals, computer and language skills, past experience, including academic accomplishments, citizenship, and student status.
3. Two letters of recommendation – First, from a current/previous professor who is familiar with your work.  Second, from someone with processional credentials, preferable from a previous employer or someone who has known the applicant for more than two years. (Letters cannot be from any family relatives)
4. Official college transcripts
5. Five references – References must not be related to you, should know the applicant for a minimum of one year.  Applicant must provide contact information (email, phone number, address)

After we receive your application, and if you meet the requirements, Renie Subin/Smita Joshi will contact you for an interview (in person or by telephone). If you are selected, a complete application package will be sent to you to begin the security screening. Note that it takes about 3-6 months to complete the application and security process.

Compensation
This internship is a voluntary position and is unpaid however academic credit is available; consult with your advising councilor. Students are responsible for obtaining their own transportation to and from post, housing, and personal expenses.
 Security Assurance Check (SAC) Request
As an intern for the U.S. Commercial Service you will go through a background security assurance check. A security assurance check is mandatory for the position.    No offer of employment is final until, a favorable assurance check is received.
Upon Completion
Once students have completed their internship with CS India, they will receive a certificate of completion. Further more, the time allotted for the internship can be applied towards the application process for employment with the U.S. Commercial Service.
