As of July 28, 2006, the known and unresolved bugs are:

1. Application does not permit users to reselect the same map location or line segment when producing circle, buffer and concentric ring studies Current work around --users must resize the map or try a different location before returning to the first selection area.
2. The 'Map Overlay Key' does not display after a "labor shed" overlay map is resized or shifted.
3. The Paired Area module does not work properly when the user resizes the map between defining the first and second stage selection areas.
4. Other known bugs and unfinished fixes
   a. The Pair Area report generates an error when the user resizes the map between selection of the first and second area.
   b. The Circle and Concentric Circle selection areas are not retaining the original selection point chosen by the user.
   c. The Print/Save window does not yet provide 'save' options and the map image does into incorporate a map scale and overlay key.

What is OnTheMap?

The Local Employment Dynamics (LED) released version 1.0 of the web-based mapping application called OnTheMap on February 3, 2006. Currently 17 states (California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Iowa) are now available to the public.

The project was supported initially by the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) at the U.S. Department of Labor. It has two major functions in accordance with the ETA agreement: (a) building the origin-destination data infrastructure for workers within a state (in this inaugural version of OnTheMap, cross-state patterns in two neighboring states -- Illinois and Missouri -- are also shown), and (b) developing a web-based mapping application showing where workers live and where people work within a state and cross-state, in the case of Illinois and Missouri.

This is an Internet application that uses a standard Internet browser. It permits users to zoom in for small area viewing (neighborhoods or small towns) or zoom out to view metropolitan areas or regional labor markets. The application includes a QuickStart User Guide with a glossary of terms, selection of geography by layers including city, zip code, county, metropolitan statistical area, and workforce investment area, three types of reports, paired area mapping, and concentric ring analysis.

The project provides origin-destination flows for two years, 2002 and 2003, with the following workplace and residence characteristics by detailed geographic unit at the block group level.

1. Industries represented (at the 2-digit NAICS code level)
2. Proportion and number of workers by earnings range
3. Proportion and number of workers by age range
4. Employment Quarterly Workforce Indicators such as
   a. Job gain and loss
   b. Hires and Separations
   c. Earnings of Hires, and
   d. Earnings of Separations
   
5. Number of establishments

Working with Labor Market Information (LMI) agencies and Workforce Investment Boards (WIB), the mapping applications can be directly used throughout the One-Stop Career Center system that answers such questions as:

1. Where are the employers in particular industries located?
   
2. Where are the high wage employment areas?
   a. What industries are located in the high wage employment areas?
   b. Where do the workers who work in high wage areas live?
   
3. Where are the high growth employment areas?
   a. What industries are located in the high growth employment areas?
   b. Where do workers who work in high growth areas live?
   
4. Where do workers live?
   a. What are their characteristics?

Participating State Partners

Seventeen (17) states are currently participating in OnTheMap. They are: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

System Requirements

For satisfactory performance, we recommend that you use

• A computer with at least 256MB RAM, a high performance graphics card, and a monitor with at least 1280x1024 resolution,
• Download access speed of at least 500Kb/s or high-speed broadband internet connection (e.g., DSL, Cable, T1 connection),
• An Internet browser such as Firefox version 1.0 or higher, Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher, Netscape version 7.1 or higher, or their equivalent.
• Browser set to accept session cookies. Browser with JavaScript and style sheets enabled and "Popup Blocker" turned off.
