In the Spotlight

The lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), one of four freshwater sturgeons inhabiting the waters of North America, is the largest fish and the only sturgeon found in the Great Lakes. Lake sturgeon was once among the most abundant fish species in the Great Lakes; however, over-fishing and habitat loss in the 19th century reduced the lake sturgeon population to only 1% of its former abundance. Today, the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) plays an important role in ongoing management efforts to restore lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes with their research work at the Detroit River, a waterway that connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Eerie. Visit the Fish at Risk section of the GLIS Web site for more information on this and related topics.

Featured Publication

Researchers from the USGS International Falls Biological Station of the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) and the Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit teamed up to study threats to the long-term viability of the Shoepack Lake muskellunge population in Voyageurs National Park. Read an article on this restoration project in the latest issue of Fisheries and Aquatics Bulletin (Volume V, Issue 3).
