Take Action to Protect Our Youth from Traumatic Brain Injury

Along with many others, I was shocked to learn about the recent death of actress Natasha Richardson. Ms. Richardson fell while taking skiing lessons on a beginner’s slope. Although she hit her head, she reportedly got up from the fall and declined any immediate medical treatment since she didn’t lose consciousness and felt fine. But soon afterward the world learned what we at CDC already knew – even a seemingly minor bump to the head can result in a significant traumatic brain injury.

Let’s Create Communities That Support Parents and Children

We’re all disturbed by the tragedy of child maltreatment. We are dismayed when we see headlines informing us of yet another child’s life ended or altered forever because of maltreatment by a trusted caregiver.

Driving Demands Our Full Attention

When we drive, we join the community of drivers on the road. We rely on each other to follow laws and pay attention. We trust that everyone on the road with us is a dependable member of our community.

Minimum Legal Drinking Age:  What Conversation Should We Have?

Over the past several months, there has been a lot of talk about the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA). Should it remain at 21, or should our country consider lowering the drinking age to 18 years old?

Injuries Are Not an Acceptable Risk of Growing Up

I don’t like to use the word “accident.” Accident implies that what happens is unpreventable and the resulting injuries are inevitable. That’s a false assumption when it comes to our children.

CDC science shows that most unintentional childhood injuries can be prevented. Injuries do not have to be an accepted risk of growing up.

Let’s Eliminate Health Disparities

Earlier this month, Americans made history when they elected an African-American as President of the United States. For many children, Barack Obama’s election brings truth to the statement, “You can be anything you want to be, even president of the United States.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month

Each year in the U.S., women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner related physical assaults. Men are the victims of about 2.9 million intimate partner related physical assaults. The numbers have not increased over the past years but they have not decreased either and are still unacceptably high. Why?

Child Passenger Safety Week

Family road trips these days are a far cry from what they used to be. For one thing, in many cars, games of “Slug Bug” and “I Spy” have been replaced with kids whiling away the hours watching movies and playing video games. But a more important development is that kids now are safer then ever when travelling in motor vehicles. A big reason for this is stricter child passenger safety regulations.

Are we prepared for a blast?

In an instant, an explosion or blast can wreak havoc; causing numerous injuries not commonly seen after natural disasters such as floods or hurricanes. And unfortunately, as many of us see daily through news reports, explosions are by far the most common cause of injuries associated with terrorism.

Exploring media technology and youth violence

Adolescents are using new media technology in increasing numbers. Everyday, teens and pre-teens chat and send text messages on cell phones, take pictures and make videos on their cell phones, check out buddies’ MySpace or Facebook pages, and post blogs on their favorite websites. My own teens rely on these tools to stay connected with their friends and me.

Me? A Blogger?
People are motivated to blog for different and varying reasons. The most compelling of these for me is the ability to quickly and pretty directly get the perspectives of those we aim to serve and those who can help us serve well. In keeping with our strong tradition of partnership, I am launching this blog. Every two weeks or so, I will prepare entries or invite guest writers to discuss timely issues relating to Injury Center priorities, science, and partnerships. I invite you–our partners, colleagues and customers–to exchange ideas and thoughts with us through the creation of this discussion forum. Read More of the blog and comments.

Summertime Safety

Recent news stories about “dry” drowning have surprised many parents since they never heard of it and didn’t realize it was possible. "Dry drowning“ occurs when there is a laryngeal spasm and water is not allowed to penetrate the lungs and asphyxia occurs. Read More of the blog and comments.

Media outreach raises awareness. Can it do more?
Child maltreatment is a significant public health problem in the United States, and preventing it is one of the priorities of CDC’s Injury Center.

During this year’s National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, center staff worked hard to raise awareness about child maltreatment and highlight the agency’s prevention efforts. Read More of the blog and comments.

Aim for an A+ in back-to-school safety
Look at the empty shelves of any office supply store, and you’ll know without a doubt—it’s back-to-school time. Around the country, kids are donning new outfits, strapping on backpacks full of shiny school supplies, and climbing onto big, yellow busses. Read More of the blog and comments.
