Stieglitz in the Darkroom

Overview: The exhibition of 75 photographic prints spanned Stieglitz's career. It was chosen from the "key set" of 1,600 of his photographs, which had been given to the National Gallery by Georgia O'Keeffe in 1949 and 1980. Works on display included Winter, Fifth Avenue (1893), which was taken during a snowstorm; photographs taken in the rain; and night prints of 1896. The landmark 1915 photogravure print The Steerage and an extremely rare gelatin silver print of the same image were also on view.

Sarah Greenough, curator of photographs at the National Gallery of Art, organized the exhibition. The brochure was made possible by The Arcadia Foundation and The Circle of the National Gallery of Art.
