   International Activities Program

Cooperation with Brazil

Background:

Brazil is the 10th largest energy consumer in the world and the third largest in the Western Hemisphere, behind the United States and Canada. Brazil has recently made great strides in increasing its total energy production through deepwater exploration. Increasing domestic oil production has been a long-term goal of the Brazilian government.

As a member state of the International Regulators Forum, MMS interaction with Brazil has been primarily in offshore regulatory and safety issues. MMS’ primary counterpart and focus for cooperative activities in Brazil is the ANP (National Petroleum Agency) within the Brazilian Ministry of Energy.

Past Activities:

On October 31st MMS participated by invitation to an event hosted by The American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil. MMS representatives met with the delegation to discuss the MMS oil and gas regulatory program, environmental protection, and safety. The Brazilian delegation totaled about 30, representing oil and gas operating companies, manufacturers, and government agencies. Attached are the MMS presentations: MMS Overview, safety issues, and environmental assessment.
