Initiatives to Reduce Refrigerant Emissions

EPA is pursuing several efforts, beyond regulations, to reduce emissions from MVACs.

Universal Technical Institute Study on Disposable Containers

EPA commissioned the Universal Technical Institute in Avondale, Arizona to conduct tests to determine the amount of refrigerant remaining in do-it-yourself (DIY) small cans and professional 30 pound cylinders used to charge motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems. The study resulted in a final write-up (PDF) (38 pp, 723K, About PDF) along with its peer review report (PDF) (17 pp, 186K, About PDF).

Mobile Air Conditioning Climate Protection Partnership

Recently, EPA helped kickoff a global voluntary effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle air conditioning systems through the Mobile Air Conditioning Climate Protection Partnership. Members include environmental authorities from Australia, Canada, Europe, India, and Japan; environmental and industry nongovernmental organizations; and global vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers. The work of the Partnership is important because improved mobile air conditioning will avoid millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions and will save billions of gallons of fuel each year.
