UCR Frequently Asked Questions

Within the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, there are two methods of collecting crime data: the traditional Summary reporting system and the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). These two methods collect a vast amount of data that are accessed by the general public, researchers, media, and others regarding the levels of crime in the United States. However, as with any Program, users are likely to have questions about how the information is collected and presented.

With the following Frequently Asked Questions, the national UCR Program staff aims to answer the user’s general questions as well as incident-specific questions about the Summary reporting system and general questions and incident-specific questions about the NIBRS.

If you have any questions, contact the Multimedia Productions Group, Module D3, 1000 Custer Hollow Road, Clarksburg, West Virginia 26306-0157; telephone (304) 625-4995; facsimile (304) 625-5394; or e-mail cjis_comm@leo.gov.
