Department of Energy grants to modernize the nation's electricity transmission and distribution systems to maintain reliability and infrastructure protection. Smart grid systems allow for communication between a customer's meter and the utility.

Department of Energy-administered grants to governments, Indian tribes, and states to reduce energy use and fossil fuel emissions and for improvements in energy efficiency.

• Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Research, Development, Demonstration and Deployment (EERERDDD)
Department of Energy grants to fund research, development, and demonstrations of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency demonstrations for industrial and commercial practices. Grants may also be used to accelerate research and development for advanced batteries necessary for the conversion to electric vehicles and the storage of energy. Specific funding is set aside for biomass and geothermal projects.

Funds investments in energy efficient modernization and renovation of HUD-sponsored housing for low-income, elderly, and disabled persons.

• High Speed Rail Corridors and Intercity Rail Passenger Service
Federal Railroad Administration discretionary grants to states to pay for high-speed rail and intercity passenger rail projects.

• New Starts / Capital Investment Grants
From heavy to light rail, commuter rail to bus rapid transit systems, New Starts grants will fund new or extended transit fixed guideway systems across the country.

• Transit Capital Assistance
Transportation Department funds to purchase transit equipment and to make improvements at intermodal and transit facilities; includes funding for discretionary grants to public transit agencies for capital investments that will assist in reducing the energy consumption or greenhouse gas emissions of their public transit agencies.

Department of Energy grants for energy-related home improvements for low-income customers; grants can be used for improvements to building energy efficiency and energy retention, heating and cooling systems, electrical system, and electricity consuming appliances.
