WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $627,961 grant to assist approximately 87 workers affected by the sudden closure of Wood Structures Inc. headquartered in Biddeford, Maine, with a manufacturing facility in Saco, Maine.

US Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis testifies before Senate HELP Committee on green job skills training
Secretary Solis testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions regarding green jobs skills training for workers. Solis stated the promise of green jobs is not only to help re-start the economy and put Americans back to work, but also to help make America more energy independent. DOL is developing plans for use of Recovery Act funding for research, labor exchange and job training projects that prepare workers for careers in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries, and will soon issue solicitations for grant applications to be administered by ETA. The department has encouraged states to expand existing training programs that have the potential to prepare workers for careers in the renewable energy sectors and for other green jobs.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today certified for release $54,227,780 in unemployment insurance (UI) modernization incentive funds to the commonwealth of Massachusetts. Massachusetts qualified for the funds available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) by allowing workers to use their more recent earnings to qualify for benefits. Massachusetts' approved application will be posted at the department's Employment and Training Administration Web site.
