Mr. Thomas
("Woody") Williams, Jr. of Hattieville, Arkansas was a cooperative observer for the National
Weather Service (NWS) for a little over 11 years. During that time, he collected
rainfall data on a daily basis and sent his measurements to the NWS. The
measurements became part of a national database and were eventually published (for use by
business, government agencies and the general public) by the National Climatic Data Center
in Asheville, North Carolina. For his efforts, Mr. Williams received a 10 Year
Length-of-Service Award in May, 2000. |

Award from the National Weather Service. |
The award was
presented by Chuck McDonald, Hydrometeorological Technician (right in the photo above),
Renee Fair, Meteorologist-in-Charge (not pictured), and Mr. Jimmy Russell, Data
Acquisition Program Manager (left in the photo above)...all of the National Weather
Service Forecast Office in North Little Rock, Arkansas. |
Sadly,
Mr. Williams passed away on August 29, 2001. In addition to being a
dedicated weather observer, he was quite a historian. He was interested
in the history of Hattieville (he published a book on this topic) and
the background of his family. He had an amazing gift for remembering
dates and events. He also enjoyed raising flowers. Mr. Williams
will not be forgotten! |
