Welcome to the IEEE History Center

The mission of the IEEE History Committee is to further the preservation, research, and dissemination of information about the history of electrical science and technology, and in particular the technological and organizational history of IEEE, its members, and their professions, in order to increase awareness and understanding of the role of engineering and technology in the improvement of the quality of life for people throughout the world.

The Committee provides information and recommends policies to the IEEE Board of Directors, to other IEEE Boards and organizational units, and cooperates with public organizations (of an historical nature) involved in historical activities.

The Committee provides oversight to the IEEE History Center to serve as the worldwide center of excellence for preserving, researching, and promoting the legacy of electrical engineering, computing, and associated sciences and technologies.

IEEE Global History Network Rolled out at IEEE Sections Congress 2008

On 20 September, at IEEE Sections Congress 2008 in Quebec City, IEEE unveiled the IEEE Global History Network (GHN), a new open-content portal developed by the IEEE History Center.  With expected contributions from thousands, possibly tens of thousands of volunteers, IEEE expects the GHN to become the premier public record for preserving and interpreting the history of technological innovation.

To contribute to the GHN, IEEE members may log in using their IEEE web account user ID and password.  Other potential contributors who are not IEEE members may ask for contributors' access through a separate link. Contributors will be able to create new entries and add to existing ones using written narratives, photos, drawings, diagrams, documents, and video and audio recordings.
