2009 King Day of
Service is Largest Ever –
Obama’s Call to Service Gets
Enthusiastic Response
A record number of Americans honored
Dr. King and answered President-elect
Obama’s call to service by volunteering
on the January 19 King Day of Service.
More than 13,000 service projects took
place across the country, more than
double
last year. Americans made it “a day on,
not a day off” by delivering meals,
refurbishing schools, reading to
children, signing up mentors, and much,
much more.

Fueled
by President-elect Obama’s call to
service, this was the largest King Day
of Service ever. In 1994, Congress
charged the Corporation for National and
Community Service with transforming the
King Holiday into a national day of
service. This year, President-elect
Obama asked all Americans to serve on
King Day and make an ongoing commitment
throughout the year. Thanks to all those
groups and individuals who took part in
this historic event!
