Special Support Programs

Special Support Programs offer volunteers an opportunity to enhance the museum experience for visitors in various ways, from assisting with hands-on activities to providing staff with administrative support. Contact the following museum/office for more information. Note: An asterisk * indicates weekend opportunities are available.

National Museum of American History, Behring Center*
Hands-on activities provide visitors of all ages with opportunities to experience the museum in an exciting and interactive way.
- Spark!Lab*: Volunteers for Spark!Lab, from the museum's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, help visitors explore the invention process by facilitating hands-on activities, conducting scientific experiments, managing interactive exhibits, and sharing stories and information about American invention. Visitors also help facilitate special programs in Spark!Lab.

National Museum of Natural History*
Opportunities are available at these three programs listed below:
- Discovery Room*: Designed for visitors of all ages, with most activities directed for children, this room contains many natural science objects and encourages visitors to enjoy a learning experience through touch and vision. The Discovery Room is staffed by docents who act as facilitators, respond to visitor questions, and assist with hands-on activities and the maintenance of the collections.
   
- O. Orkin Insect Zoo*: Displayed in this popular exhibition are live crustaceans, insects, arachnids, millipedes, and centipedes. Docents demonstrate tarantula feedings and help interested visitors handle live arthropods. They also interpret insect and arthropod topics for the public.
   
- Naturalist Center*: Located 45 minutes from the National Mall in the Leesburg Airpark Business Center, Virginia, the center houses thousands of objects and books as well as scientific equipment to identify natural objects and curiosities. Volunteers help maintain the collections and assist visitors with using the resources to answer their questions.

National Museum of the American Indian*
Opportunities are available at its three facilities listed below:

Volunteers assist staff on a variety of projects, including cultural arts and educational programs for the public, special events, and behind-the-scenes activities. Offices needing help include the Film & Video Center, Resource Center, Photo Services Registration, Exhibitions Department, Community Services, Visitor Services, and the Executive Offices.

National Postal Museum*
Public Program Assistant*: Play a vital role in facilitating fun and educational experiences at events throughout the year. Volunteers lead hands-on activities, interact with diverse visitors, and much more. Opportunities are available on weekends or weekdays. Attend at least six programs per year.

National Zoological Park*
The Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) provides many opportunities for volunteer service in a variety of programs and special exhibit areas. The range of opportunities for volunteering is divided into four categories:
- Education Volunteers are on the front lines at the Zoo - interacting with visitors of all ages, enhancing their experiences by answering questions, offering information, and allowing them to handle objects. Minimum age is 18 years old.
   
- Zoo Support Volunteers work behind the scene - assisting office personnel, gardeners, and animal keepers; collecting behavioral data; painting, building, and doing anything else that is needed. Minimum age is 18 years old.
   
- Special Events Volunteers make possible the many educational, fund-raising, and membership events celebrated at the Zoo. Activities range from collecting tickets to helping children with craft projects to waiting tables. Minimum age is 15 years old.
   
- Teen Volunteers can participate in programs that run throughout the year or ones only available in the summer. Many teens find they can fulfill their schools' requirement for community service hours while having fun at the Zoo. None of these programs involve interacting with live animals. Minimum age, depending on the program, is 13 years old.

The Smithsonian Associates*
The Smithsonian Associates (TSA)* creates opportunities for lifelong learning through an array of public programs that include lectures, performances, seminars, courses, and study tours. Volunteer opportunities include:
- Office Volunteers assist staff during the work week. Assignments include data entry, registration, and administrative tasks.
   
- Event Volunteers* assist staff weekdays, weekends, and evenings. Assignments include selling or checking tickets at the door, distributing handouts, ushering participants to seats, and other duties as assigned.
   
- Youth Teacher Assistants assist staff with the summer youth program while fulfilling the school's community service hours. Assignments include providing support to staff and instructors and serving as role models for younger children. Minimum age is 15 years old..
