Despite the cold, overcast skies, more than 800 people showed up to "take back their natural areas, one potato at a time". Air potato (Dioscorea bulbifera) is a non-native invasive vine which has spread throughout much of Florida, as well as parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Volunteer "citizen scientists" are trained using a specially developed Invasive Species Early Detection and Reporting Kit. With this kit, volunteers can help detect invaders' arrival and dispersal in their own local areas. Volunteers will conduct surveys in the field to look for and record the presence or absence of target invasive plant species.
