Topic: GOES-10 Imager and Sounder Patch Temperature Change
Message Issued: February 18, 2009, 1715 UTC
Satellites Impacted: GOES-10
Products Impacted: GOES-10 Imager and Sounder
Date/Time of Initial Impact: February 26, 2009 0315 UTC
Details: For users of the GOES-10 Imager and Sounder
On February 26, 2009, SOCC Engineers will change the GOES-10 Imager and Sounder patch temperatures from
their MID set points (101K and 100K respectively) to their LOW set-points (94K and 92.5K) at
approximately 03:15 UTC (22:15 ET on February 25, 2009)
The change will be done during keep out zone time and prior to eclipse to minimize the impact on users.
The temperature transition will take approximately 4 hours. The imager users may see slight data
degradation (venetian blinding) in the first few frames after the eclipse (5:15 S. America) until the
patch temperatures stabilize at their new lower set-points.
The signal to noise ratio will improve as a result of operation at a lower patch (detector) temperature.
The patch will be controlled at this temperature (94/92.5 K) until October 2009 when it will be switched
back to MID setting during the autumn eclipse/KOZ season.
MBCC will also be turned off at the time of the patch temp change and will be turned back on approximately
two days later.

LRIT Product Anomaly:
Details of the Problem:
ESPC has been experiencing a partial disruption of the distribution of GOES data from the LRIT Domain 4
Communications Module. The issues were channel anomalies associated with the processing of GOES imagery
internally in the LRIT system. We have been monitoring the system for several hours and have detected no
further anomalies. We will continue to monitor the system over the next several hours but at this time
believe the problem to be corrected.
Data Affected by the Partial Distribution Interruption:
GOES-WEST IR, VS , and / or WV image channels but primarily IR channels
GOES-EAST IR, VS, and / or WV image channels but primarily VS and WV channels
Date and Time of the Partial Outage:
2/08/07, 0830 UTC
Length of the Partial Outage:
Partial outage of LRIT for approximately 4 days
Contact Point for Questions:
Please contact ESPC Operations at ESPCoperations@noaa.gov if you experience
any more problems with the products on the LRIT East or West Broadcast.
ESPC Operations OCL (Operations Crew Leader), 301-817-3880
Details of the Problem:
ESPC is experiencing a partial disruption of the distribution of GOES data from the LRIT Domain 4
Communications Module. The issues are channel anomalies associated with the processing of GOES imagery
internally in the LRIT system. The affected channels are different for the GOES-West and GOES-East
broadcast. A series of measures have been taken and are being undertaken in order to diagnose this
problem. This includes installing monitoring and “clean-up” scripts to assist in troubleshooting. At
approximately 3:00 PM EST, we will make a decision whether or not to move the LRIT processing to a “back-up”
server or remain with the primary servers for the overnight period and whether we feel further testing and
evaluation is necessary. Further notification will be delivered at that time.

To all GOES13 Users,
GOES13 Imaging has returned as of 030/2002z. Ground system engineers are still investigating into the cause of the ground system problem.
INR may be slightly out of spec and an INR recovery is in progress.
Data Affected by the Outage: GOES-13
Date and Time of the Outage: 01/30/2009 1645 UTC, 12:45, pm EST Length of the Outage: 01/30/2009 1645 UTC, 12:45, pm EST until 2002 UTC,

To all GOES13 Users, GOES13 Imaging has stopped as of 030/1632z due to an ongoing ground system problem.
The SSGS engineering team are currently working the problem and hopefully will have it resolved soon.
Data Affected by the Outage: GOES-13
Date and Time of the Outage: 01/29/2009 1645 UTC, 12:45, pm EST Length of the Outage: Until further notice
The GOES-12 navigation problem that occurred yesterday (January 28th, 2009) has been corrected as of the 20:15Z image.
GOES-12 Outage:
At 22:40Z on Jan 27, 2009, GOES-12 had a re-occurrence of a thruster leak which caused a Yaw momentum build up.
This caused the navigation to be off by approximately 20 scan lines. As of 17:15Z the navigation is still off and
engineers are working on the problem. It should be fixed within a couple of hours.
Data Affected by the Outage: GOES-12
Date and Time of the Outage: 01/27/2009 2240 UTC, 6:40 PM, EST Length of the Outage: Until further notice
NESDIS Office of Satellite Operations (OSO) and Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) have
monitored GOES-12 overnight, with Image and Navigation Registration (INR) recovery successful. GOES-12 will be placed back as
operational GOES-East at 1500 UTC.
At 1500 UTC, all products including but not limited to GINI (AWIPS), ESPC Remappers, GOES Derived products, Radiances, Satellite
Cloud Products (SCP), LRIT will switch back to GOES-12. ESPC personnel will closely monitor data and products during the
changeover.
Users receiving GVAR directly from GOES-12 should be receiving GOES-12 imager and sounder data. GOES-12 is currently running the
INR recovery schedule (19-minute Full Disk scans at XX:15 and XX:45 UTC with CONUS soundings at XX:46). OSDPD and OSO will
coordinate on when GOES-12 will be placed back into routine mode.
Users obtaining GOES-13 GVAR directly from GOES-13 are recommended to switch back to GOES-12. GOES-13 will remain in a GOES-East
scanning schedule until OSO and OSDPD determine that GOES-12 is stable for operational GOES-East activity.
GOES-13 is located at 105 degrees West and has WMO Satellite ID #257
GOES-12 is located at 75 degrees West and has WMO Satellite ID #256

UPDATE #12 1/5/2009 @ 1230 UTC
GOES-12 has undergone a successful anti-ice decontamination of the imager, and is slated to return to imaging and sounding on Monday,
January 5, 2009 at 1500 UTC. At this time, GOES-12 will be placed on an Image and Navigation Recovery (INR) schedule (19 minute Full Disk
scans at XX:15 and XX:45, CONUS Soundings at XX:46). The length of the INR recovery schedule will depend on the successful INR recovery
of GOES-12. GOES-13 will be maintained as GOES-East through the GOES-12 INR recovery period.
For users pointing directly to GOES-12 and obtaining GOES-13 GVAR: At 1500 UTC on 1/5/09, GOES-12 GVAR will commence directly from GOES-12,
but image navigation and registration may be out of desired specifications for a period of time. Users may want to consider adjusting their
antennae to obtain GVAR directly from GOES-13.
** ESPC will continue to produce operational GOES-East product from GOES-13 (Remapper, GINI/AWIPS, radiances, derived products, interpretive
products) during the GOES-12 INR recovery. ESPC will monitor GOES-12 data, and if INR recovery is successful, switch GOES-East operations
back to GOES-12 on or about Tuesday, January 6 at 1500 UTC. **
GOES-12 will be maintained at Midnight Black Body Calibration Correction (MBCC) Mode 1 (instant averaging) until Thursday, January 8th when
SOCC will switch calibration mode back to MBCC Mode 3 (4 day averaging). SOCC reports a 10-20 percent signal gain on GOES-12 following the
successful decontamination.
Background Notes:

UPDATE: 12/15/2008, 0845 UTC, 03:45 AM, EST
UPDATE: GOES-13 will be switched to GOES-East beginning at 0500 UTC (12:00 p.m. EST).
Details of the Outage: At around 2200 UTC, GOES-12 s uffered a thruster anomaly causing the suspension of
GOES-12 imaging and sounding schedules. At 2303 UTC, GOES-11 (GOES-West) was placed into Full Disk mode to
cover for the GOES-12 outage. At that time, the GOES ingest a nd NOAAPORT Interface (GINI) was switched to
alternate mode to allow delivery of GOES-11 data to East users.
At around 0500 UTC, once ingest of GOES-13 data is verified by ESPC, the GINI and all GOES-East products will
be fed with GOES-13 imager and sounder data.
ALL Services (LRIT, EMWIN, DCS, SARSAT) will remain on GOES-12, and GOES-13 GVAR will be retransmitted through
GOES-12. Users currently receiving services including GVAR from GOES-12 should not need to repoint to GOES-13.
It is anticipated that this configuration will remain in place for at least 24 hours.
Data Affected by the Outage: All products from GOES-12
Date and Time of the Outage: 2218 UTC , 5:18 pm
EST Length of the Outage: Unknown
