Search Tips
Searching the Site 
Users are able to perform a simple search from the left naviagation search box while on any page of the site.
  • Type a word, phrase, or number in the search box. The term can use the "exact phrase" in any of these fields or can use Boolean operators "OR" and "AND".
  • In addition, truncation may be used to retrieve variations in word endings. The asterisk (*) can represent no extra characters, a single extra character or multiple characters.
Searching the Research Projects Database 
  Quick Search 
   This page allows users to perform a simple search using the Keyword or Full Text option with the "Any Words", "All Words" or "Exact Phrase" option.

Users can customize the display of results with either a "brief" or "detailed" view of the projects and the number of results per page.

 Advanced Search 
  This page allows users to perform several search strategies such as:
  • Advanced Search box with the ability to select from eight different fields (keywords, full text, title, start date, end date, abstract, investigator, and project number) and use the "Any Words", "All Words" or "Exact Phrase".
  • Advanced Search box with selection from Agency drop-down box
  • Advanced Search box with selection from Food Safety Category drop-down box
  • Advanced Search box with selection from Agency drop-down box and Food Safety Category drop down
  • Agency drop-down box
  • Food Safety Category drop-down box
  • Agency drop-down box and Food Safety Category drop-down box together

  • Detailed View - All Fields in the Database are displayed

  • Type a word, phrase, or number in the search box. The user can use the "exact phrase" in any of these fields or can use Boolean operators "OR" and "AND" expressed as "any word" and "all words", respectively. (Note: If user decides to search by "investigator", these search options appear: "first name", "last name", and "full name".)
  • In addition, truncation may be used to retrieve variations in word endings. The asterisk (*) can represent no extra characters, a single extra character or multiple characters.

    Exact Phrase
  • To find a project with the "exact phrase" apple cider:
  • Type apple cider in the search box and choose the "exact phrase" and "title" options.
  • The search results will list all projects that have a title with the phrase "apple cider". To broaden the "exact phrase" search on apple cider, the user should choose "key words", "abstract", or "full-text" options.
    Any Word
  • To find a project title with "any word" apple OR cider:
  • Type apple cider in the search box and choose the "all words" and "title" options.
  • The search results will list projects that include either word, apple OR cider in the title.

  • To find a project title with "all words" apple AND cider:
  • Type apple cider in the search box and choose the "all words" and "title" field options.
  • The search results will list projects that include both words, apple AND cider in the title. These words can be in an exact phrase or separately.
    Truncation
  • Model* - model, models, modeling
  • Salmonell* - Salmonella, salmonellosis
  • Spongiform* - Spongiform, Spongiforme (British spelling)
