Frequently Asked Questions about the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Reference CollectionWhat is the NIDDK Reference Collection? The Reference Collection is a database of thousands of health education materials, including fact sheets, brochures, and audiovisual materials produced for patients and health care professionals. What is unique about the Reference Collection? The Reference Collection aims to include fugitive literature. Fugitive literature includes high-quality items that are produced by groups or individuals outside the mainstream publishing pathways. The Reference Collection lists informational items, including books and book chapters, journal articles, brochures, and videotapes. The Reference Collection helps users find and obtain items that may not be included in standard databases such as MedlinePlus or may not show up in the top results during a typical Internet search. What topics are covered in the Reference Collection? The Reference Collection is designed to support the work of the NIDDK, which includes clinical studies related to and information about diabetes and digestive, kidney, urologic, hematologic, and endocrine diseases and disorders. Why can’t I find the full text of items in the Reference Collection? For each item, the Reference Collection provides bibliographic information, including the publication’s format, its publisher, availability information, and an abstract that summarizes the information in the publication. How do I obtain the full text of items in the Reference Collection? Full-text copies of materials can be obtained by accessing the “Full Record” of any search result and contacting the organization or publisher listed in the “Availability” field. How do I conduct a more advanced search? Click on the Detailed Search button on the Reference Collection homepage. How do I search for only journal articles? Use Detailed Search and select the format type “Journal Article.” Why can’t I find any information about cancer? Although the Reference Collection contains some information about relevant cancers, more detailed and comprehensive information can be found on the National Cancer Institute website at www.cancer.gov.
