Description
The Clinical Center, in collaboration with NIDDK, the Naval
Medical Research Institute (NMRI) and Walter Reed Army Medical
Center (WRAMC), has identified, planned for, and implemented
program requirements necessary to support the newly initiated
NIDDK Organ -- Tissue Transplant Research Unit. This new unit
will support the novel clinical research conducted to study the
effectiveness of co-stimulation blockade in kidney and pancreatic
islet cell transplants.
Accomplishments-to-Date
- Convened a multidisciplinary and cross-institutional team
to guide the planning and implementation process based on NIDDK
program plan
- Performed needs assessment to identify resource requirements
- Development of a Memorandum of Understanding between NIDDK,
WRAMC, NMRI, and the CC outlining personnel and resource requirements
and fiscal responsibilities
- Hired a full complement of personnel as identified in the
planning process to support the initiative
- Completed design and construction of the new organ transplant
unit
- Unit opened May 3, 1999

- Identify and implement ongoing resource requirements as program
matures
