CBMM Offers Exhibit Host Training Oct.
20 to 23
ST. MICHAELS, MDDo you have a curiosity about the Chesapeake
Bay and enjoy interacting with people of all ages? Then becoming
an Exhibit Host at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum could be just
what you're looking for. The Museum will offer fall training from
October 20 through 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
Exhibit hosts provide invaluable support to the Museum by welcoming
visitors and helping them gain a deeper understanding of the Bay
region and its history. They greet audiences in the CBMM's innovative
exhibits, historic Hooper Strait Lighthouse, interactive Waterman's
Wharf display and the Museum's working boatyard making visitors
feel welcome, answering general questions and encouraging groups
to explore.
The four-day training teaches participants about the Museum, community
history and storytelling, enhancing the visitor experience, and
strategies for greeting diverse audiences. No experience is required
and volunteers need not have an extensive knowledge of the Bay or
maritime activities. A desire to learn about the Bay and the Museum
and the time to commit to at least two-shifts each month are the
only requirements. The Museum is particularly in need of weekend
volunteers.
Most sessions will begin in the Van Lennep Auditorium, located
in the Steamboat Building on Museum grounds. There will be a 30
minute break for lunch each day so please bring a brown-bag lunch.
This program is free of charge and is limited to 16 participants.
Pre-registration is required for all sessions. To register, contact
Melissa Spielman, Volunteer Administrator at 410-745-2916 extension
252 or mspielman@cbmm.org.

CBMM Offers Special Programs for Marine
Art Exhibition
ST. MICHAELS, MDThe 30th anniversary exhibition of
the American Society of Marine Artists is receiving rave reviews
at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. During the month of September,
the Museum is offering programs to learn more or try your own hand
at marine art in its various forms.
Learn, over a delicious lunch, about "Marine Art of Yesterday
and Today" on Wednesday, September 17, from noon to 1:30
p.m. at the Academy Art Museum in Easton. This collaboration between
CBMM and the Academy showcases Russell Jinishian, who is internationally
recognized as America's leading authority on contemporary marine
art. Mr. Jinishian will chronicle the history of marine art, and
its beginnings through to the present day, highlighting some of
the key artists and their most important works. When once there
were a handful of marine artists, today there are literally thousands
of artists dedicating themselves to this art form across the United
States and around the world. The result is a pool of marine art
that far exceeds anything else in any other time in our history.
Lunch is included with program fee, which is $20 for CBMM or Academy
members, and $25 for non-members. To register, please call the Maritime
Museum at 410-745-2916.

contemporary marine art presented by members of the American Society
of Marine Artists. To provide individual instruction, the class
will be limited to six people. A supply list will be sent with registration
confirmation. The workshop will take place on the CBMM campus. The

Bay Buyboats Come to CBMM, August 8 &
9
ST. MICHAELS, MDEight Chesapeake Bay buyboats will rendezvous
at the Museum from August 7-9. CBMM members and visitors can board
the boats on Friday, August 8, and Saturday, August 9.
Chesapeake Bay buyboats were primarily used to go out on the fishing
grounds to purchase crabs, fish or oysters from watermen, so the
watermen could continue to fish and the catch could get to market
more quickly. According to writer Larry Chowning, author of the
book "Chesapeake Bay Buyboats," there were around 1,000
of these boats on the Bay in the 1920s and 1930s, but there are
fewer than two dozen left on the Chesapeake today.
The boats, all meticulously restored, are part of the annual reunion
of buyboat owners who tour the Bay each summer. This is the fleet's
first visit to St. Michaels.
Tying up at CBMM and welcoming visitors to board throughout the
weekend will be the 60-foot P.E. Pruitt, captained by Kevin
Flynn; the 60-foot East Hampton, captained by Dave Rollins;
the 70-foot Nellie Crockett, captained by Ted Parrish; the
60-foot Muriel Eileen, captained by Dave Cantera; the 50-foot
Bessie L, captained by Andy Newman; the 55-foot Samuel
M. Bailey, captained by Steve Bailey; the 50-foot Thomas
J, captained by Tom Parker; and the 60-foot Prop Wash,
captained by David Wright.
For more information, please call the Museum at 410-745-2916. Admission
to CBMM is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for children between
the ages of 6 and 17 years. Children under 5 and Museum members
are admitted free.
