Annotated R01 Research Plan and Summary Statement
Note: We expect that in 2009, application data will be old enough that investigators would be willing to have their applications appear online.
At that point we'll post a new sample application. For more on application, see NIAID's Grant Application portal.

Introduction
We are truly indebted to Dr. Mark Smeltzer for permitting us to use his
outstanding basic science application, which he wrote as a new investigator, to help the next generation of investigators write their applications.
Though his research plan was originally written in 1998, we've updated the application to reflect the latest application sections and requirements. We expect to post a sample electronic application once investigators feel that data are old enough to share.
All our yellow annotations reflect the opinion of
NIAID staff scientists and should be taken as advice only. Differing
opinions may exist, including those of NIH peer reviewers.
Please note that the application is copyrighted. It may be used for nonprofit educational purposes provided the document remains unchanged and both Dr. Smeltzer and NIAID are credited.
How to View and Print the Files
If you don't already have a Portable Document Format (PDF) file reader installed, you can install the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader or another free PDF reader.
Depending on your local printer settings, you may need to adjust margins or Acrobat's zoom level to print the full page.
Annotated Research Plan Attachment Samples
The samples shown below would be attached to your Grant Application Package in the PHS 398 Research Plan component, Research Plan Attachments, Section 2.
Samples 2 through 5 were created using the PHS 398. We provide them as writing samples. They do not conform to all the requirements for electronic application, including page limits and other items.
Read more about preparing each attachment and page limits in your opportunity's Grant Application Guide.
For writing help, see the Part 5. Research Plan in the NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal.
