The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Blood Bank is managed by the NIH Clinical Center Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM). We collect blood and blood components for transfusion to NIH patients. We also collect blood components for laboratory use by NIH researchers.
We are licensed by the Food and Drug Administration and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks as a blood donor center and transfusion service. All of the blood collected at the NIH Blood Bank is tested for hepatitis viruses, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and other infectious diseases before it is released for use by NIH patients. We maintain high quality standards to ensure the safety of both our blood donors and transfusion recipients.
