DotReading Research Working Group

Reading Research Working Group Participants

The Reading Research Working Group (RRWG) is sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) in collaboration with the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL). It is part of NIFL's efforts to provide educators, parents, and others with access to scientifically-based reading research, including research-based tools for improving literacy programs and policies for children, youth, and adults, through the Partnership for Reading. A primary goal for developing the principles is to provide practitioners in family literacy programs and other ABE settings with research-based methods for facilitating the intergenerational transfer of literacy by improving the literacy abilities of adults.

The RRWG is a panel of experts in the field of adult literacy research established by NIFL and NCSALL in order to:

  • Identify research related to adult reading instruction in the field of adult literacy that is "scientifically-based" as defined in the Reading Excellence Act (Definitions from the REA)
  • Prioritize the research in terms of its relevance and importance for literacy instruction at the adult level
  • Identify gaps in the research
  • Come to a consensus on a list of research-based principles and practices for adult literacy reading instruction that can then be disseminated to adult literacy practitioners
  • Identify the best ways to disseminate the research-based principles and practices.
