Education
Education is an integral part of American democracy. I believe it is the key to sustaining American competitiveness and prosperity. State and federal government have the duty to make sure that the public school system in the United States has the funding and other support necessary to provide a quality education to all American children. A well-educated workforce breeds innovation, discovery and productivity. Cultivating and maintaining a well-educated workforce is crucial in the current global economy, where America is competing with other countries for innovation and market share.
I support early childhood development programs such as Head Start, Reach Out and Read, and the Reading is Fundamental initiative. This year, I signed letters to the appropriations committee requesting funding for each of these programs. Establishing the desire to learn at an early age is vital for children’s cognitive, social, and psychological development. In addition, I signed a letter of support for the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which provides states with federal resources to support career and technical education programs. Training received from career and technical education programs is also very important for sustaining a diverse, competent, and capable workforce.
In the past few years I have signed proposals for several increases in the number and size of Pell Grants for college students. I have also voted to cut interest rates for student loans. The cost of education increases each semester, and it is important that Congress help alleviate the burden of the cost. I also cosponsored legislation (H.R.5157, Removing Impediments to Students Education Act or the RISE Act) to repeal a law that prohibits juveniles convicted of minor non-violent drug offenses from receiving financial aid.
As your Congressman, I want to stay informed on the current educational needs and issues. As a result, I have joined the Rural Education Caucus, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Caucus, the Mentoring Caucus, the Community College Caucus, and the Financial and Economic Literacy Caucus.
