Rover ApplicationHow to BeginA step by step explanation of how to Install, Download and Run the Rover application. InstallStep 1: Verify that you have Java Runtime Environment 1.4+ installed. If you do not, there is a link provided on the right. Step 2: Verify that you have Sun Webstart installed. If you do not, there is a link provided on the right. Step 3: You can click on the Rover link to the right OR download the ZIP file. The Rover link uses Java WebStart technology. You will not need to run the application from the command line. If you prefer to use the command line version, download the zip file. DownloadYou may download the Ground Truth files by following the menu system on the left. Download a sample of Type A files and unzip the files to a local directory on your machine. RunIf you wish to use the WebStart technology, click on the Rover link to the right. This will automatically run the Java application. After the 2nd run, it will ask you if you wish to have icons on your desktop. In addition, you can open the WebStart console and run the Rover application after you have run the application at least once from the link provided here. If you prefer to run the Java Application from the command line, download the Zip file. The link is on the right. After downloading and unzipping the file, run the rover.bat file if you use Windows or the rover script file if Unix. For Unix users, you may need to turn on the executable bit. NEW FEATURES (November 2003): Feature 1) You can now browse ground truth and researcher data remotely by selecting FILE | BROWSE in the Rover Menu. You no longer have to download the data if you don't wish to. This option also allows you to access anyone's FTP site so you could setup shared XML/TIF data used by Rover. Feature 2)You now have the ability to overlay your own XML data on the ground truth data. To download a sample groundtruth file and research file, click here. To run this example. First open 002.xml (in the zip file you just downloaded). then open the Segmented_002.xml file. This will give you a graphic visualization of your data compared to the ground truth data. In addition, a new menu option TOOL | EVALUATE. This will then give you statistical information about your segmented page. A new drop down menu appears in your toolbox that has the following options:
In order to have a reseacher/overlaid XML file you need to have in you XML file the following element: <Page FileType="Segmented"> <---- Notes that this
XML file is a researchers segmented file and should be overlaid. This
XML entry comes right before PageID. If you have question, please email
me.
Once Rover is running, open one of the files you downloaded. You may click on either the XML or the TIF file to open. It will find the pairing. If you receive an error about unable to locate the DTD file, you may download the DTD file link on the right. Usually the DTD file needs to be placed on your desktop for Webstart users.

RoverThe Rover application uses Java WebStart technology. You will need to insure you have Java Runtime Environment 1.4+ and Webstart installed on your machine. JRE 1.4 can be found here. Download Webstart here. Once you are sure you have Webstart and JRE installed you can run Rover When you run Rover for the first time, click START when prompted. The second time you run Rover, it will ask you if you want shortcuts on your desktop. If you prefer to run the Java application from the command line download the Rover ZIP file. Some systems may require you have the DTD file downloaded separately.
