What is Section
508?
Section 508 is essentially an accessibility law that was
enacted to ensure that everyone has equal access to electronic
information. According to Access Board that developed the
standards:
“Section 508 requires Federal departments and agencies
that develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information
technology to ensure that Federal employees and members of
the public with disabilities have access to and use of information
and data, comparable to that of the employees and members
of the public without disabilities–unless it is an
undue burden to do so.”
While Section 508 has a much broader application, most TARGET
Customers are seeking information on how this applies to
their website. For this reason, TARGET trainings and evaluations
usually focus on accessible websites and PDF documents.
