International Cancer Surveillance Activities:

Collaborations on Models of Cancer Prevalence and Incidence

The Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences has been collaborating with the Instituo Superiore Sanita (Rome, Italy) and Istituto Nazionale Tumori (Milan, Italy) to:

  1. apply demographic back-calculation models developed by these groups to estimate US incidence and prevalence from mortality and survival,
  2. reach European/US consensus on methods to estimate cancer prevalence based on tumor registry data, and
  3. apply models developed by these groups to estimate complete prevalence from cancer registries which have limited duration of follow-back.

Software under development will be widely released to facilitate computation of these methods. The work has been funded by a series of small contracts.
