BUCKLE UP, AMERICA!

In addition to the materials included here, see the "Patterns for Life" section on page 8 for information on child passenger safety programs and the "Pupil Transportation Safety" section on page 11 for intermodal issues related to school transportation. Also, the entire Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planner 18 was dedicated to occupant protection. See the "Previous Planners" section on page 18.

Program Materials

Buckle Up, America! Organizational Action Kit (4) is a complete Program Planner that was designed to support the Thanksgiving 1998 Operation ABC Mobilization. It focuses on supporting law enforcement of seat belt and child safety seat laws, and complements earlier program materials developed for the Buckle Up, America! (BUA) campaign. The information and ideas are useful for planning year-round events or to begin formulating ideas for the Thanksgiving 1999 Operation ABC Mobilization. (August 1998, DOT HS 808 752, Item #1P0833) For a comprehensive list of Buckle Up, America! materials, write to: Buckle Up, America!, NHTSA Office of Communications and Outreach, (NTS-21), 400 Seventh Street SW, Washington, DC 20590.

Operation Teach is an organizing guide for educators to incorporate buckle up messages into science, math and civics lessons (see photo, page 10). It recommends age-appropriate activities to get children involved in key traffic safety messages and to reinforce good buckle up habits for the entire family. A copy of Operation Teach is included in this Program Planner and a photo appears on Page 10 of this publication. (September 1998, DOT HS 808 783, Item #5P0231)

Standard Enforcement Saves Lives: The Case for Strong Seat Belt Laws (5) covers all the basic facts on standard enforcement seat belt laws, how these laws save lives, success stories from the U.S. and other countries, a model law, and ideas on how to generate support for public policies in your state. (January 1999, DOT HS 808 846, Item #1P1128)

Zero Tolerance for Unbuckled Children is one of the latest in the Buckle Up, America! series of Program Planners. It was designed to promote the Memorial Day 1999 "Operation ABC Mobilization," but the information and ideas are useful for planning any child passenger safety effort. (March 1999, DOT HS 808 864, Item #1P1128)

Seat Belts and African Americans and Seat Belts and Hispanics are two fact sheets that address seat belt use and non use within two diverse communities. They include statistics (general and population-specific), support from minority organizations for seat belt laws, and facts about enforcement. (African Americans: DOT HS 808 866, Item #1P1127) (Hispanics: DOT HS 808 867, Item #1P1126)

Consumer Materials

Buckle Up, America - There's Just Too Much to Lose (3) is a brochure that complements the BUA Organizational Action Kit (see above under "Program Materials"). It explains the year-round approach to the buckle up campaign and encourages civic, business, health, law enforcement, education and other institutions to get active at the local level to support safety belt programs. (August 1998, DOT HS 808 751, Item #1P115)
