The library also includes documents
with virtually no public circulation, including
trip reports or memos detailing individual field
projects.
It also holds series of government documents
for each NPS unit within the Midwest region, including
various management plans, historic overviews,
and regional and park-wide syntheses. This facility
houses oversized topographic maps and thousands
of documents on microfilm.
In addition, the MWAC Resource Center also holds
two special collections. The William E. Sudderth
Collection is a unique body of 1,040 rare and
out of print items. This collection, bequeathed
to MWAC upon the death of long-time MWAC historical
archeologist Sudderth, contains the results of
a lifetime of collection and scholarly interest
in historic American materials. This compilation
represents an extremely valuable resource for
analysis of 18th through 20th century artifact
assemblages.
The Center acquired a second special collection
in the summer of 2002, donated by Professor Emeritus
Robert H. Stoddard of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's
Department of Anthropology and Geography. This
valuable collection contains 1,956 documents relating
to the culture history of Nebraska and the northern
Plains.
Maintaining this collection requires ongoing
commitment of staff. The entire collection is
searchable on a Pro-Cite database, and new accessions
are entered into this file prior to shelving.
Materials checked out by MWAC staff must also
be tracked periodically, with checking of location
and condition.
The MWAC library collection represents a valuable
compilation of literature. Visiting researchers
are welcome to access it, but because of staffing
limitations and the fact that many materials are
irreplaceable, all must stay on-site. |
