Falling under the auspices of NGS,
the Coastal Mapping Program holds the enormous responsiblity of
producing accurate maps of the nation's 95,000 miles of shoreline.
.The shoreline maps are used to create
and update the shoreline on NOAA's nautical charts and other coastal
management purposes. .The nautical
chart is called the most fundamental of navigation instruments..
For this reason, its accuracy and completeness are essential..
Creating and/or updating this information involves several types
of data collection.
