Chairman's
Welcome
As Chairman of the House Committee on
Education and the Workforce, let me take this opportunity to welcome you
to our website. I am Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, and I hope the information
on these pages gives you a clearer idea of the critical role of the
committee in the development of Federal education and workforce related
legislation.
The 21st century brings with it new
realities of global competition in an information rich, high tech economy.
We need an education system and workforce and job training policies that
reflect those new realities. That is why I am committed to developing
education legislation that helps states and localities to develop high
academic standards and the means for meeting those standards. That is also
why I want to streamline our workforce training policies and modify
our 20th century labor regulations to fit the needs of the 21st century
workforce.
The
Committee and its five subcommittees oversee education and workforce
programs that affect and support hundreds of millions of Americans, from
school teachers and small business operators to students and retirees.
In a changing economy increasingly driven by technology, competition, and
knowledge, the Education and the Workforce Committee will work during the
109th Congress to build on vital reforms set in motion by President Bush
during his first term -- pressing for constant improvement in education;
modernization of outdated federal rules that stifle freedom and
innovation; and secure access to health care, retirement security, and
training for American workers.
My door will always be open to members of
goodwill from both parties who want to help forge agreement on the
important issues facing us. More than that, I want to work with state and
local officials and the general public to make positive reforms for
Americans from grade school to the golden years.
Together, I am confident that we can get
the job done.
